The BE KIND Model:
There are many models that help de‑escalate someone in crisis and move them toward safety, such as ASIST, QPR, SAFR, ACE, and SafeTALK. The BE KIND Model is another tool you can add to your crisis intervention “tool belt.” If kindness, which is an intentional act, can change a mindset, why not use it as a crisis intervention model? The BE KIND Model is one part of the Think 3‑2‑1 crisis intervention strategy, which includes two mnemonics: BE KIND and REST.
The words BE KIND and REST and the mnemonic letters are an easy way to remember how to dialogue with someone in crisis. The communication dialogue is a practical approach to facilitate effective conversation and to achieve positive outcomes. The training provided to learn the BE KIND model is to equip ordinary people to be the frontline defense to lead them to the next level of safety. It may be that the person in crisis will seek help sooner.
